Historic and artsy tour of NYC

Malcolm X Blvd & West 146th Street, New York, NY, USA

Starting this 1 hour route from Harlem’s Malcolm X bl 146 st, ending in Centre st and broome street in manhattan

Colonel charles young park to your left at the beginning of the route, names after an americal soldier, born into slavery, who became a colonel and the superintendent of the national parks

When you pass w 141 st, you will see savoy ballroom site on the left. It was one of the harlem hotspots, in operation from 1926 to 1958 and revered as the world’s best ballroom. One of the most popular venues for lindy hop, the Savoy was unique for its no discrimination policy. The value was demolished in 1958, but you can read the plaque that remains

You’ll take a right on 124 st to pass around marcus garvey park and the richard rodgers ampitheatre, a site for arts and cultural programming year round.

As you pass 110 st you will see the duke ellington statue on your right and the north tip of central park. Duke ellington, a jazz bandleader and composer of the swingdance era, is standing next to his piano.

Just past 106 st you will see the ungermeyer fountain on the right, conservatory garden, and burnett fountain. This is a 6 acre flower, perennial, and crabtree garden. It is a popular venue and worth a stop to catch a wedding or take a free self guided tour. Shortly after, the bus will turn to your left to see the museum of the city of NYC

At 95th st you will see a lake to your right, and the shuman running track, a 1.58 mile loop run by dustin hoffman in the film, Marathon Man

At 89th st you will pass the guggenheim on your left, designed by frank lloyd wright, and containing several early modern and contemporary collections.

At 84th st you will see the metropolitan museum of art on your right. If you hop off here, you can walk a short distance to see the alexander hamilton monument the obelisk, and the belvedere castle

At 71 st you can see the Frick collection on your left, a small collection of old masters artwork.

At 65 st you will pass the central park zoo and leave the bounds of the park

You are now on fifth ave! You can spend a lot of money on this high end shopping area

53rd st is the edge of the theatre district and the Museum of modern art

At 34th st you can look to your right and straight up to see the empire state building. 102 floors of art deco style, and a fantastic paid observatory on the 80th floor.

26th st will bring you to madison park on your left and just ahead, the triangular shaped flatiron building. At 20 floors high, it was one of the few skyscrapers when built in 1902. As of 2020, the building has been empty for renovations.

Your bus will turn left on 8th st and you can look straight south to the washington square park, one of NYC’s best public parks

You will drive the rest of your route through union square and soho. The name Soho comes from “South of Houston St”
